LICRA Searching Think-a-loud
For this activity you will once again express your thoughts aloud as well as use your now superb screencasting skills; however, you will be putting some new researching strategies to the test. Using the topic below that corresponds with the topic that you chose for the first activity you will be attempting a LICRA search, this includes brainstorming activities.
Topics:
Step One: Open either a Word document or Google doc and title it Planning guide for (topic you chose).
Topics:
- ebooks
- water or energy conservation
- weather patterns
Step One: Open either a Word document or Google doc and title it Planning guide for (topic you chose).
- This is where you will house your initial ideas for research. This document should include questions you ask yourself regarding your topic, potential answers to these questions, specific websites or organizations that could be beneficial to your research. This is not a formal document and the text should reflect your ideas and thought process as you tackle different avenues and perspectives for research on your topic.
- This pre-thinking exercise will give you a place to start your research. It may bring into the light avenues that you had not considered. The guide can also be used as a back up if you ever feel lost. This planning guide should not direct your research, after you begin the process you should be open to pursuing all directions.
- See a sample planning guide below:
- Make sure to save your planning guide, this will be the first place you will take the viewer of your screencast for this activity. (you will begin your screencast on this page)
Step Two: Begin your research using the techniques described on the homepage regarding LICRA searches.
- Remember this is open-ended research. You should not have an end result in mind, the direction of your research should be spontaneous.
- This includes using various keyword phrases you developed in the planning period, the development of new keywords throughout your research, and utilizing quotation marks or link: technique.
- You should also employ search strategies, including scouring specific sites from various perspectives on the topic.
Step Three: In your planning guide develop a plan for your screencast. This screencast should meet the maximum length of five minutes. It should also be more contrived and planned out than the first screencast you composed for Activity #1. This screencast should take the viewer through you entire search on the chosen topic. Therefore, you need to evaluate your research and chose the highlights to sum up how you reached your end goal.
The ultimate goal of the screencast is to provide a synopsis of your research process that utilized the mindset and strategies of LICRA researching.
Things to include in the narration:
- A short step by step description of the places you visited and used in your research.
- Describe any roadblocks your encountered.
- Explain any struggles or successes you had while attempting to use this new mindset while researching.
Step Four: Share your completed screencast by sharing the link via email.
